A Prediction of Brown Dwarfs in Ultracold Molecular Gas
نویسنده
چکیده
A recent model for the stellar initial mass function (IMF), in which the stellar masses are randomly sampled down to the thermal Jeans mass from hierarchically structured pre-stellar clouds, predicts that regions of ultra-cold CO gas, such as those recently found in nearby galaxies by Allen and collaborators, should make an abundance of Brown Dwarfs with relatively few normal stars. This result comes from the low value of the thermal Jeans mass, which scales as MJ ∝ T /P 1/2 for temperature T and pressure P , considering that the hierarchical cloud model always gives the Salpeter IMF slope above this lower mass limit. The ultracold CO clouds in the inner disk of M31 have T ∼ 3K and pressures that are probably 10× higher than in the solar neighborhood. This gives a mass at the peak of the IMF equal to 0.01 M⊙, well below the Brown Dwarf limit of 0.08 M⊙. Using a functional approximation to the IMF given by (

The formation mechanism of brown dwarfs
We present results from the first hydrodynamical star formation calculation to demonstrate that brown dwarfs are a natural and frequent product of the collapse and fragmentation of a turbulent molecular cloud. The brown dwarfs form via the fragmentation of dense molecular gas in unstable multiple systems and are ejected from the dense gas before they have been able to accrete to stellar masses....
متن کاملGravitational fragmentation and the formation of brown dwarfs in stellar clusters
We investigate the formation of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars through the gravitational fragmentation of infalling gas into stellar clusters. The gravitational potential of a forming stellar cluster provides the focus that attracts gas from the surrounding molecular cloud. Structures present in the gas grow, forming filaments flowing into the cluster centre. These filaments attain high g...
متن کاملThe Brown Dwarf - Exoplanet Connection
Brown dwarfs are commonly regarded as easily-observed templates for exoplanet studies, with comparable masses, physical sizes and atmospheric properties. There is indeed considerable overlap in the photospheric temperatures of the coldest brown dwarfs (spectral classes L and T) and the hottest exoplanets. However, the properties and processes associated with brown dwarf and exoplanet atmosphere...
متن کاملUVES spectra of young brown dwarfs in Cha I: radial and rotational velocities
Based on high-resolution UVES spectra we found that the radial velocity (RV) dispersion of nine of twelve known young bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I dark cloud is 2.0 kms, i.e. significantly smaller than the RV dispersion of T Tauri stars in Cha I (3.6 km/s) and only slightly larger than the dispersion of the surrounding molecular gas (1.2 km/s) (Mizuno et al. 1999). This res...

We explore the spectral and atmospheric properties of brown dwarfs cooler than the latest known T dwarfs. Our focus is on the yet-to-be-discovered free-floating brown dwarfs in the Teff range from ∼800 K to ∼130 K and with masses from 25 to 1 MJ . This study is in anticipation of the new characterization capabilities enabled by the launch of SIRTF and the eventual launch of JWST. In addition, i...
